I'm sure you know about Hurricane Irene. It passed by Washington D.C. not even a week after the earthquake. What's up with that?! Anyway, we weren't really affected by the hurricane in any serious way. We did have a lot of rain and wind. It started raining 10 am on Saturday and didn't stop until Sunday morning. It got worse in the evening, so we just stayed home and watched a movie. We didn't lose power, though it flickered a few times (some of our friends and family lost power though). We took a walk Sunday morning and saw a lot of trees that had been knocked over and broken limbs, but that happens every time there is a big storm here since there are so many trees.
I'm glad that we didn't have to evacuate like a lot of people did and that we didn't have any flooding, though we are 3 floors up anyway. We've looked at a lot of pictures and read about some of the damage and deaths that Irene caused. It's really sad and makes me grateful we only got rain.

It has definitely made me think about being prepared We don't have a lot of food storage since we don't really have room. We do try to keep some extra cans of food and baking supplies on hand. And we don't have a 72-hour emergency kit, but I would like to put one together. Any suggestions?

Shelf Reliance!!! They have a program where you tell them how many people are in your family you have, how long of a time period you would like to accumulate for (ours is 6 months) and your monthly budget and they do the rest of the work for you! Every month they send me $30 of products (including shipping) off of my queue (think Netflix) and we slowly build up to our family of five, six month supply. That's just half of what's cool. The other half? It's good! Seriously! I drank their milk and I thought it was better than the WalMart milk we get! I had a chicken salad sandwich, purely of Shelf Reliance food storage and it was better than every other chicken salad sandwich I've ever had, except my mom's! They have freeze dried products that keep the nutrients in, unlike dehydrating does. Their freeze dried yogurt bites are amazing!! The blueberry and pomegranate are so super yummy! All three of my kids can't get enough of them! I even feed them to my babies. They were their first solid food because they dissolve so super fast! I am actually having a home party next week. Too bad you can't come... Or, you could. You know...hop on a plane!!! You get better pricing from parties, so let me know if you're interested. (This isn't a shameless plug. I seriously love it and don't care if I make nothing off the party at all. I just want people to learn about how easy it is to get food storage...) Or maybe you could look up if there is a host(ess) in your area!
As for room. Well, I don't have it either. We currently stuff it under beds. Then we'll move to closets... I used to always use that as an excuse to Curt, but I figure there is always an excuse I could find, but if we were ever in a situation were we needed it then I would really regret making excuses...
They do have 72 hr kits too, I think, but they are probably more expensive than putting it together yourself. I'm sure LDS.org in the provident living section, it has everything you need to get to put kits together. Make sure you put some old(er) garments in and several sizes of clothes for Asher.
I try to go through our 72 hour kits every six months (around conference time) and update the food and make sure the kids clothes would still fit them. Having a kit for a baby is really hard because they grow so quickly, but something is better than nothing. We just bought some backpacks and started to fill them. They are so full now that if we did ever have to go anywhere with them we would be in trouble!
I'm glad that you guys weren't affected much by the natural disasters in your area. That is so weird that you had an earthquake and a hurricane all in the same week!
